The “6 Rights” of Drug Aministration
Right Patient
- Ask the resident their name and date of birth to ensure proper identification.
Right Drug
- Verify that the drug is not expired.
- Verify that the drug label matches that of the order you are passing
Right Dose
- Understand how to accurately convert medication units such as grams, milligrams and micrograms.
- Verify the amount with the dose
Right Time
- The drug must be administered per the provider’s order within a reasonable time period.
Right Route
- The correct route is necessary for the appropriate absorption of the drug.
- Know the correct locations and techniques for administering the drug properly.
Right Documentation
- Document in ALIS the correct time and date of administration.
- Document the correct variance (passed, not passed, refused, exception).
